What to Wear for a Photoshoot in Cascais, Portugal | Lisa Reid Photography

What to Wear for Your Portugal & Cascais Photoshoot

One of the most common questions I’m asked before a session is, “What should we wear?”Whether you’re planning a family photoshoot in Cascais, a couples session along the Lisbon coast, or simply documenting a season of life in Portugal, the best outfits are always the ones that feel comfortable and natural.
Portugal’s light, textures, and relaxed pace lend themselves beautifully to soft, timeless styling. A little planning helps everything come together in a way that feels effortless — and still very much like you.

Let the Surroundings Guide You

Portugal’s coastal landscapes, stone buildings, gardens, and beaches are naturally soft and neutral. Clothing that echoes these tones tends to photograph beautifully, especially in outdoor sessions around Cascais, Sintra, and the Lisbon coast.
I usually suggest starting with:

  • Cream, ivory, and warm whites
  • Soft beige, sand, and stone
  • Dusty blues and faded denim
  • Muted greens like sage or olive
  • Subtle touches of blush or warm grey

Rather than everyone wearing the same colour, aim for tones that sit well together. This creates a sense of connection without feeling overly styled.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

For families or couples, think about how colours and textures work together rather than matching exactly. Choose one or two main tones and build around them with softer neutrals.
For example:

  • A soft knit dress paired with linen trousers
  • Denim combined with cream or muted blue
  • Earthy tones balanced with gentle pastels

This approach keeps the focus on faces, movement, and connection — which is always the heart of a relaxed photography session.

Choose Comfortable, Natural Fabrics

Portugal’s climate — especially near the coast — can be warm and breezy. Breathable fabrics help you stay comfortable and move naturally during your session.
Look for:

  • Linen
  • Cotton and gauze
  • Light knits
  • Soft jersey or ribbed fabrics
  • Relaxed denim

Fabrics with a little movement tend to photograph especially well in outdoor portrait sessions.

Shoes, Layers & Practical Details

If we’re photographing on the beach in Cascais, going barefoot often feels easiest and most natural. For town locations, gardens, or cobblestone streets, simple sandals, espadrilles, or neutral sneakers work well.
A light layer is always a good idea — even in warmer months — as coastal breezes can be cool. Cardigans, shawls, or lightweight sweaters add warmth and texture without distracting from the overall look.

Layering & Knits in the Cooler Months

Portugal’s winters are generally mild, but early mornings, late afternoons, and coastal locations can be windy and feel cool. Layering allows flexibility and photographs beautifully when kept simple.
Some easy layering options include:

  • Light knits over dresses
  • Cardigans or pullovers in neutral tones
  • Soft scarves for added warmth and texture

Fine-gauge knits, ribbed fabrics, and soft wool blends tend to photograph best. Cream, oatmeal, camel, grey, and soft olive tones work particularly well for winter photoshoots in Portugal.

For extra warmth, leggings or soft tights worn under dresses or skirts are a comfortable and practical option — especially for moms and children. Matte fabrics in neutral colours keep the look timeless.

Outerwear & Footwear in Winter

If a jacket is needed, choose something simple and unstructured. Neutral outerwear without bold logos or strong contrast blends more naturally into photographs.
For footwear, ankle boots, leather shoes, or neutral sneakers are all great options. Comfort is always more important than style, especially when walking on uneven paths or stone streets.

Accessories & Final Touches

Simple accessories can add softness and personality:

  • A light scarf
  • A woven or neutral hat
  • A favourite piece of jewellery

As always, less is more. Accessories should feel like part of you, not something added just for the photos.

Above All, Be Comfortable

The most important thing to wear to your photoshoot in Portugal is something you feel comfortable in. When you feel at ease, it shows — and those natural, unforced moments are always the ones worth remembering.
